A 280 m² single-family home located on a 1,200 m² plot on the outskirts of Mérida. The project responds to the needs of a young family seeking a contemporary home with open spaces and direct connection to the garden.

The south-southwest orientation maximizes solar gain in winter, while overhangs and deciduous vegetation provide summer sun protection.

Concept

The design consists of two main volumes articulated around a central courtyard. The north volume houses the day area—living room, kitchen and dining room—with large windows facing the south garden. The east volume contains the bedrooms, oriented east to capture morning light.

The materiality combines exposed concrete with local limestone cladding, establishing a dialogue with the Extremaduran landscape.

Sustainability

The project incorporates passive climate control strategies: optimized orientation, concrete thermal mass, cross ventilation and seasonal shading. Photovoltaic panels and an aerothermal system ensure an A energy rating.

The garden uses native species with low water consumption, with a drip irrigation system fed by rainwater collected in a 10,000 liter cistern.
